In closing on three decades of writing about music I’ve experienced many extraordinary moments; times when I’ve felt elevated, exhilarated, energised at a song I was hearing, by the person I was speaking to, through the performance I was witnessing or, on a few life-changing occasions, at the moment in history I was living through.
This is so inspiring. I love the idea of using the newsletter as a notebook, and a place for musings and inspiration. Engagement like this with the community is what makes substack so special.
I have recently started opening Patti’s emails, and the delight I feel at her ad hoc presentations…you put it so well. The lightness, the generosity, my god. It’s breathtaking. Well-said, and I like the spirit of devotion - both the one she has put into her life, and the one with which we arrive to see what treasures she will share. Thank you for putting words to it.
Patti Smith easily expresses her joy and her dedication to living a creative life in this world. Seeing her perform twice, while I lived in Seattle, are phenomenal memories.
It’s refreshing to once again read about Patti Smith after so many years of seeing or hearing nothing. I was beginning to think she had quietly left the earth.

as someone born in South Africa... it's nice to see another here on Substack 💚
nicely written, Diane 🙏🏼
we should all be as authentic as Patti has been in her writings...

Agree with every beautiful word! So glad Substack shared this widely.
I think you write as beautifully as she sings!

Thank you SO much for writing this. Now I have to check out her Substack. The whole notion of reader as notebook is groundbreaking for me.
I hope Patti reads this. What a wonderful job you have done encapsulating the joys you get form reading her Substack.

Coincidentally, I just wrote my own SubStack piece called "Patti Smith Changed My Life." Check it out (https://bonniegarvin.substack.com) if you like.
Looking forward to seeing Patti in Monterey on Aug 11! Rock and Roll!

Is this the Patti Smith that had a song "Here Comes the Night"?
